At Eagle Rock Ranch in Jefferson, Colorado, the elk start to gather at dusk. “I’ll be driving up the road, and the herd will be on the side, almost like they’re waiting to come and spend the night eating here,” says Dave Gottenborg with a chuckle.

Gottenborg is working to create a habitat on his ranch that sustains the elk population. The ranch sits on the migratory path of the big animals, and every winter, hundreds of them travel through Eagle Rock looking for food as they move from higher to lower elevations. You could see their presence as a wildlife management success story or a nuisance, depending on how you look at them. Maybe a bit of both.

HB 5004 is Connecticut’s best hope for meaningful climate action this year.

The bill will grow the green economy, reduce the state’s reliance on fossil fuels, and make Connecticut more resilient to climate change impacts.

For the bill to pass, legislators need to hear that Connecticut residents want climate action.

Submit your testimony (suggested language at the link in bio) before Friday, March 8, to show legislators that this bill is important to you.

So often, news about climate change is about numbers and data, but figures don’t convey the psychological impacts of our warming home, and they don’t necessarily inspire action. Emotions can.

As much as I love the snow, it makes me sad these days. I can’t help but watch my child play in it and worry about how rare of an occurrence snow days will be for her, about how I will explain what humans did to the planet she’s inheriting. Joy and Anxiety. Hope and Despair. Climate emotions are complicated, and I think you have to let yourself and your kids feel all of it. Already today I’ve answered questions about why it’s snowing, why it hasn’t snowed much this winter, if it will snow more, and when we can have hot chocolate. ❄️

Our weekly milk purchase is fraught. I want to buy only one kind and I want to purchase one that is as good for the planet as I’m able to in our imperfect world. I’d prefer oat, in a recyclable cartoon. My child wants cow milk from one of the farms near our house. She somewhat understands the climate implications of each (ask her about almond milk, and she’ll give you a lecture about water and bees.) Recently, though, I’ve seen many dairy companies trying to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, some even claiming to be climate-neutral. But what does that mean? Is it just a marketing tactic? Remember back to that first full COVID school year

Remember back to that first full COVID school year? Some of the talk around hybrid learning was about the end of snow days. The end of the magic of waking up to a free day. Of sleds and snowballs. Snowmen and snow angels. Playing outside until hands were raw, coming in to drop all the wet gear as close to a heat source as possible, drinking hot chocolate, and eating treats. Repeating it all.

All that talk about the end of snow days failed to mention that it wasn’t technology that would spell their death; it was our continued use of fossil fuels.

In my latest Substack I wrote about the increasingly rare snow day, how I talk to my child about why there isn’t much of it this winter, and what if we get climate crisis mitigation right? Link in bio.

It is surreal to realize that I have now owned thi

It is surreal to realize that I have now owned this house for 8 years. I still don’t know what all the light switches do. There are still boxes of the previous owners’ things in the attic. There is still a hole in the kitchen counter. But it feels like we’re now woven into the history of this house. The scratches on the floor, the trees we’ve planted outside, the laughter and the tears the house has soaked up. I love this spot. And as in years past, we’re also planning to leave for most of the summer. There are a few weeks left available to rent. Reach out if you’re interested.
