SONY DSCI love the idea of being a locavore, although I’m not a fan of the word. Jessica Prentice coined the term locavore Prentice in 2005. It refers to someone who eats locally grown food normally produced within a 100-mile radius although the exact distance is flexible.

The Arcadia Center for Food and Sustainable Agriculture is one of the organizations that have sprouted up in the wake of the popularity of the local food movement. The nonprofit organization is working to create a sustainable food system in the Washington, D.C., through a farm in Alexandria, a mobile farmers market, a food hub and a farm to school program. I first learned about Arcadia because in the course of researching potential food heroes for Relish Magazine. After writing a story on the mobile market for Relish Magazine I decided to continue volunteering at the mobile market. So far it has been quite the adventure, full of lots of a fresh food, new friends and the occasional broken down mobile market truck (only once was it my fault.)
