Did you know most backyard playground sets are mad

Did you know most backyard playground sets are made from plastic and metal and cost an average of $2,500? They often end up in landfills or sit, immovable in backyards where they rot and rust.

Amanda Lacy was looking to give her kids some sort of playground set in their backyard, but she didn’t want it to one day end up in a landfill. When she couldn’t find a sustainable option she decided to build it, creating @bijoubuild .

I came across Bijou Build and its founder more than a year ago when I was working on a story on climate resilient schoolyards. I didn’t have a fit for Bijou Build in that story but I kept thinking about Amanda and her company. So glad I got to share her story for @azureroad. Link in bio.

Like a lot of parents I spend an inordinate amount

Like a lot of parents I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about how to increase the diversity of the foods my child eats. We eat a ton of seafood and while I’m grateful the kid would happily eat salmon everyday (such an easy weeknight dinner) I know there are so many other kinds of delicious seafood that we could be eating. Like green crabs.

These invasive little creatures have been popping up on restaurant menus, including one of my local favorites @shipwrightsdaughter. For @modfarm I wrote about the chefs, including @chefdavidstandridge and @chefcharlieray, seeking out all sorts of invasive species for restaurant menus, hoping to build up ecological resilience while creating new income streams for vendors, and educating people about the impact of food choices. Successfully putting the kid on the school bus + taking the pup for a long walk = is a lovely way to start this month.

Yesterday, I would have put the odds of my “I’m shy, and it’s ok to be shy” kid getting on the school bus at 50/50, but this morning, she made a new friend at the bus stop, one that just moved to a house up the street from us and is in her grade and her class. I couldn’t have written a better storyline for the first day of school if I tried. And now, after a summer of squeezing in writing whenever I could, which meant not that much, I’m so excited to get back to it with a couple of new writing projects I get to dig into this month. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

When I was interviewing Alexandra Zissu of @cleanairmoms about how she packs sustainable lunches for her kids, her 18-year-old who was getting ready to leave for college weighed in on what she remembers. Luckily for my soon to be kindergarten there are a lot more options these days for packing healthy school lunches.
